I attended the Mega Jewish Unity Event held by Chabad at the Seeger’s Union event space. It advertised a massive challah bake, mitzvot for Israel, student speakers, refreshments, and music. After learning about this through the Rabbi’s wife Rivka, I felt so ecstatic to participate in this event and be with many of my fellow Jewish students.
During these though times it is important to be proud of my background and religion. Everyday I hope for the continue release of hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza. In this event we could dedicate a good deed such as baking challah to these hostages. At the event itself was a table with all the hostages names written down of keychains. People could choose to do a mitzvot for one of the hostages. While looking through the names of the hostages the name Itai Chen stood out for me. He is the same age as me, nineteen, I can’t possibly imagine the thoughts going through his head and how he is feeling.
While baking the challah the organizers of the event lead us through prayers and read out the directions for making the challah dough. I am not the best at cooking, throughout the entire process ingredients were flying around everywhere. I eventually got my finished product and rolled into three balls to begin the braiding process. I took each ball and rolled it out then started to weave and braid the pieces all together. It didn’t look picture perfect but I tried by best and the challah looked somewhat braided in the end. Fortunately, one of my teammates was at the event well and she offered to bake my challah for me. I gave her my challah and hope for the best. Later, I got a call from my teammate and she told me that the challah didn’t turn out great. Anyway despite the challah I worked on so hard to make I had an amazing time at this unity event and met so many new friends.
