Passage 1 : “They took a given passage, summarized it, and recast it in correct, polite, or literary Arabic, often sacrificing vivid details vital to the art of the story-teller for empty academic phrases or poetic diction” (xxii Haddawy).
- Translators took the old passage and changed the story to appropriate a European audience, losing the charm of the original story.
- The editors thought they knew best and revised the original passage, important descriptions were taken out of the text to make it sound more sophisticated.

Passage 2: ” We have increasingly poured our lives into data silos where our personal information is now mined, value extracted from it by companies for companies” (38 Waters).
- Our personal data is now being being dug up by companies who are supposed to protect it. These companies handout our data to others companies who use it to get us to do things or be inclined to something.
- Data is something that is meant to be kept private but recently companies have been going stray from confidentiality with an online user.

Reflection on Paraphrasing
- For this assignment I chose important phrases that stood out to me in both passages that can lead to a deeper meaning of what the author is trying to convey. The act of paraphrasing helped me assure my idea about what the authors big ideas of the passages. Paraphrasing helped instill a major theme being brought up in each of the readings. Honestly, before doing this exercise I had no clue what Haddaway was saying on this page.
